Hoy vamos a hablaros de Hiroshi Sugimoto, considerado uno de los fotógrafos más importantes de las últimas décadas. Esta semana fuimos a ver su exposición “Black Box” en Barcelona y nos encantó su interpretación de la fotografía más clásica con un giro conceptual, el gran número de detalles de sus imágenes y sobretodo el hecho de tratarse de fotografías tomadas con una cámara de gran formato.

Today we are going to talk about Hiroshi Sugimoto, considered as one of the most important photographers of the last decades. This week saw his exhibition “Black Box” in Barcelona and we loved his interpretation of the most classic photography with a conceptual twist, the huge amount of details and above all, the fact that all the pictures are taken with a large format camera.
Para empezar vamos a hablaros un poco de Sugimoto, nació en Tokio en 1948 y a los años setenta se afincó en Nueva York, donde quedó fascinado por la sociedad y el estilo de vida norteamericano. Sugimoto había demostrado interés por las ciencias y artes desde muy pequeño, y no tardó mucho tiempo en darse cuenta de que no quería ser un fotógrafo comercial como los que tenía a su alrededor.
To start with, we are going to talk a little bit about Sugimoto, He was born in Tokyo in 1948 and at the seventies he moved to New York, where he was fascinated by the american society and lifestyle. Sugimoto showed interested in science and arts since he was a child, and it didn’t take long until he realized that he didn’t wanted to be a commercial photographer like the ones who surrounded him.
Se caracteriza por la fuerza visual de sus imágenes, con una gran personalidad y originalidad, con un estilo que se mueve entre lo conceptual y lo abstracto, con una técnica perfecta de gran profundidad psicológica.
He is characterised by the visual strength of his pictures, with a great personality and originality, with a style which moves between the conceptual and the abstract, with technique with a perfect psychological profundity.
La exposición mostraba sus series panorámicas más conocidas y se dividía en las siguientes temáticas: Paisajes marinos, retratos, cines, dioramas y campos de relámpagos.
The exhibition showed his most known panoramic series and was divided in the following themes: seascapes, portraits, theatres, dioramas and lighting fields.
En la sección paisajes marinos se muestran paisajes primigenios de mar y cielo tomadas en varios lugares del mundo. Y destaca por la gran nitidez y claridad que permite apreciar perfectamente las olas.
In the seascapes section there are primeval sea and sky landscapes taken in several places around the world. And it outstands because of the great clarity and definition which allow us to see the waves perfectly.
La sección retratos muestra fotografías de estudio de personalidades históricas modeladas en cera, como por ejemplo la pieza principal, el rey Enrique VIII junto con sus seis esposas además de figuras políticas y religiosas. Destaca por los tonos de la fotografías, su realismo y su parecido con los estándares de los retratos pictóricos históricos.
In the portraits section there are studio photographs of historical figures modeled with wax, for example the main piece, the King Henry VIII with his six wives and also political and religious figures. It outstands because of the photography tones, its realism and its similarity with the standards of the historical pictorial portraits.
La sección cines muestran imágenes de cines clásicos y autocines. Algo muy curioso es que por tal de realizar estas fotografías dejó abierto el obturador de una cámara de gran formato durante un largometraje completo, un procedimiento muy simple pero radical, ya que la duración de la película determinaba el tiempo de exposición de la cámara.
In the section theatres there are pictures of classic cinemas and drive-in cinemas. Something curious is that in order to take those pictures he left the shutter of a large format camera open during an entire film, a very simple process but radical, because the duration of the movie determined the camera exposure time.
La sección dioramas muestra tableaux de paisajes prehistóricos tomados en el museo de historia natural de Nueva York. Estas imágenes tienen un gran realismo lo que pone en entredicho nuestra fiabilidad de la fotografía y plasma la convicción de Sugimoto de que la cámara es una máquina del tiempo capaz de transportarnos a momentos lejanos de la historia.
In the section dioramas there are prehistoric landscape tableaux taken in the natural history museum from New York. This pictures are very realistic something which questions our reliability in photography and shows Sugimoto’s conviction that the camera is a time machine able to transport us to moments far away from the history.
Las fotografías de la sección campos de relámpago se crearon con una cámara oscura y registran los efectos que las descargas eléctricas producen en negativos fotográficos. Y se caracteriza por la belleza de las figuras que forma y lo abstractas que son que da pie a varias interpretaciones.
The pictures from the section lighting fields were made with an camera obscura and they register the effects that the electrical discharges produce on the photographic negatives. And it is characterised by the beauty in the figures that it creates and how abstract they are, something with leads into several interpretations.
